WRETCHED - In Nome Del Loro Potere Tutto E' Stato Fatto EP 1983

Wretched was a hardcore punk band from Milan. Along with other bands such as Indigesti, they formed the basis of the hardcore scene in Italy during the 1980s. Their music was usually fast-paced with violent and dark lyrics. The original line-up were Gianmario (vocals), Gigi (guitars), Fabio (bass) and Giancarlo (drums), these four debuted 1982 on the split EP with Indigesti. Although they originally sang in English but soon switched to their native Italian, finding it better suited to expressing their radical political message. The band took strong anti-war and pro-anarchist stands through their lyrics and imagery. They also self-released all of their records on a label that came to be known as Chaos Productions. The band lived at the infamous Milano squat Virus, which played host to many hardcore shows in the early-mid '80's. Wretched lived and breathed the DIY spirit of rebellion that they advocated in their music.

The band recorded their first EP before switching guitar players and drummers in 1984. Daniele (guitar) and Crema (drums) played on the third, Finira Mai?, and the full length. Appearances on BCT tapes comps and the international P.E.A.C.E. compilation spread the word of "Chaos Non Musica" to everywhere punk was being played. Zambo took over drums in 1985, and the band began its shift into more heavy metal territory. They recorded one more LP and a 7Inch before internal problems (including Mario's shredded vocal cords) and line-up changes forced them to call it quits. Before melting down, they played the last show at Virus with Antisect. Unfortunately, Wretched's strong commitment to doing it themselves meant that their records have always been hard to get outside of Italy. An official discography (mysteriously missing the first EP) came out some time in the mid 1990s, and the Furious Years of Italian Hardcore compilations fills in the hole. INDIGESTI - Osservati Dall'Inganno 1985

Debut record on TVOR On Vinyl by this powerful hardcore punk from Indigesti, founded 1982 in Vercelli by Rudy Medea (vocals), Enrico Giordano (guitar), Roberto Vernetti (bass) and Massimo Corradino (drums). After some tape releases their first vinyl appearance was the split 7Inch with Wretched in 1983 and in the same year the band broke. Two years later they reform with new bass player Silvio Bernelli (Declino) with obvious stylistic changes over the previous period. The bases were always extremely fast and immediate, but the lyrics became more introspective, dark and melancholic. After a European tour the debut comes out, twelve rough, fast & tight smashers. In 1986 the US label BC Tapes & Records released the 'The Sand Through The Green' EP and returning from the tour that followed the group broke up a second time. In tne 90s the Italian label Vacation House Records released a live album (Lübeck Live 02.09.87) and a compilation (Sguardo Realtà 82/83) with early material. In 2001 they enter the stage again and their last album 'In Disparte' appeared and since then still active. That's it.

NEGAZIONE - Venlo/Bauwagenplatz 27.04.1985

Negazione is a hardcore punk band based in Turin, Italy during the 80's and early 90's. Formed in 1983, they were one of the most important band for the hardcore punk scene in Italy at the time. They were one of the early bands of the Italian hardcore punk scene, like Raw Power, Wretched, Declino & Indigesti. Negazione broke up in 1992, their last show being at that year's Monsters of Rock (?) festival. They are still remembered as hardcore legends by many not just in Italy, but also world-wide. This Bootleg is a fuckin' killer, a MUST for every Hardcore fan. Seventeen fast and raw trashers in thirty minutes in an amazing quality. If you don't get this then you're definitely on the wrong blog!!!!

SO MUCH HATE - Lies 1993

The fifth and last album by this four piece Hardcores from Oslo, active 1986-1996, on X-Mist Records/Progress Records. So Much Hate consisted of members of Svart Framtid, Kafka Process and Bannlyst. The band was one of the hardest Norwegian hardcore bands in the 80's and 90's. They played over 400 concerts in Norway and abroad. So Much Hate was strongly linked to the Blitz House and the plates, and especially their lyrics appear to be time-sculptures from Blitz's history. So Much Hate was more uncompromising and hard-hitting than any other Norwegian band from their time and were one of the leading underground bands in Europe. They were on tour including with Ignition and played more concerts together with greats such as Fugazi, Indigesti and Kina. After a farewell tour in Europe in fall 1996, they played their last concert at Blitz on November 14, 1996. Vocalist Gunnar (vocals) moved shortly to Germany and settled there, Løvik (guitars) joined the band Captain Not Responsible, while Per (bass) and Finn (drums) joined Drunk. Løvik died in March 2007. If you like the album I recommend their third Blind Alley (listen).

KINA - Se Ho Vinto Se Ho Perso 1989

Third album by Kina from Aosta on Blu Bus and we listen to fifteen pretty towards melodic songs which haven't much in common with the Italian Hardcore league, check out their first album Irreale Realtà in comparison, but it's still Kina, they don't be afraid of a musical change and have combined very varied songs here, fast as well as slower pieces are included, plus short intermediate passages that I almost always find superfluous, but the three implemented this creatively for my taste. Let me quote a review from the re-release: "Refreshingly, I don’t know a damn thing about this Italian Hardcore band that started in the mid-’80s. This was their third LP, and it’s an interesting example of the time period. Kina’s sound sources its inspiration from Washington DC’s world-famous Post-Hardcore scene. The band can still rock pretty hard, but they tend towards melodic guitar lines that complement the earnest vocals and is not afraid of acoustic guitar and other “un-punk” elements. A track like “Cosa Farete” is closer to morose college rock than, say, Indigesti, but you can imagine them playing a show together at some thatched-roof squat on an abandoned farm outside of Turin. Interestingly, Kina’s mix of these influences prefigures a band that would become massive on an underground level less than a decade later: AVAIL. There’s a similar anthemic quality that is pretty damn hard to pull off convincingly, but Kina manages." (Erick Bradshaw, MRR #461 • October 2021) An interesting piece of music in every respect, which requires just under thirty-five minutes of your time.

V/A - Killed By Hardcore #2 2002

Redrum Records, you know what this means? Genau, massive rare punk stuff from the early days and now we meet the Hardcore section and this compilation is a great example of nasty bands from every angle of this planet. I quote from back cover: "Welcome to the second installment of Killed By Hardcore. Just like that others series by those useless eaters from hell. This one's already going down hill... to the big money at the end of your wants list. Be warned: all anarchy & violence taken from original vinyls. So if it ain't digital enough you can always listen to disco shit. So bummer bitches, you'll find here explosive material of black small round flat 80s and invite your neighbors and enjoy a hearty BBQ with lots of beer." Twenty-three more on Volume 1 - I wish you all a groovy Sunday and enjoy the music.
