TON STEINE SCHERBEN - Warum Geht Es Mir So Dreckig? 1971

One of the first and most influential German language rock bands of the 1970s and early 1980s are Ton Steine Scherben and without them Punk in Germany would certainly been different. Well known for the highly political and emotional lyrics of vocalist Rio Reiser, they became a musical mouthpiece of new left movements, such as the squatting movement, during that time in Germany and their hometown of West Berlin in particular. Today, after the band's demise in 1985, and the death of Rio Reiser in 1996, Ton Steine Scherben have retained a cult following and popularity in the related scenes. Recently, some of the remaining members have given reunion concerts under the name "Scherben". Warum geht es mir so dreckig? (Why am I so miserable?) is the debut album by the band, released on David Volksmund. It includes - among other pieces - the song Macht kaputt, Was Euch Kaputt Macht (Destroy What Is Destroying You), which expressed the built-up anger and radicalization of the youth of the late 1960s and early 1970s. In 1971, after the release of the first single "Macht kaputt....", the band went to Klaus Freudigmann's studio in Berlin to record their first album. The setup for the recordings was not ideal, and the sound quality suffered as a result. This is not surprising, as all the band's output was self-produced. As such, the recording sessions were also not entirely satisfactory. In June, Agit 883 and Rote Hilfe (anarchist and leftist political organisations respectively) organised an "informational event" about the empty buildings on the Mariannenplatz in Kreuzberg. Ton Steine Scherben were invited to play, and the teach-in turned into a party which led to one of the first spontaneous squatting actions in Berlin. The recordings of the concert were used for the album's first side; the b-side consists of highlights of the studio recordings. The album's sound has been described as raw and energetic, but the sound quality is somewhat lacking. A great album full of intensity & passion which leaves a distinct mark. Bung-Ho!!!!

SVÄTSOX - Ruins 1982

Ruins was released in 1982 on Platen Records. Dolf Planteydt took a subscription behind the recording console and Svätsox, like their buddies Wormer, learns quickly and well. The bass took the tape, the sound becomes thick and composed of the scale. Ferrie (or ferry, it's the same) added a trumpet to his array of two pieces, giving his hymns punk tunes that will surely Dog Faced Hermans heard. A fourth member (Roon) was also added in the credits, giving a helping hand for Heyne singing and taking care of the organ parts of it discreet! Angular bass line, noise, playing guitar scratching, sublayer noisy, it's Aural Guerilla early. Slight reverb on the drums as it was common at the time but without creating the typical new-wave sound. Ruins is a great album. Titles surly, threatening, exploded as the grandiose Hitsquad, guitar and echo on voltage, the long climb controlled by The Cartridge box. Punk binary is completed on the roadside and we take the full brunt of a truck noise-punk avant-garde enough when you look back. The band split up in 1986.

WOMBELS - Divine Madness 1992

Another band which I appreciate are the Wombels from Ulm. The name refers to a popular animated series in the late 70's early 80's. You might think this was funpunk, for some it is this but they all wrong and have really no feeling for the melodic & hard sound of the Wombels, they remind me rather of the early UK scene. Their debut album "Fast & Bouncy" confirms this but sadly are only 73 copies been pressed because the band was not convince of the sound so it become one of the rarest german punk record. When someone has a copy please drop me a line. Visit Wombels for more input and enjoy their fantastic sound.

V/A - Four On 4 EP 1984

One more piece from the Wanted-List and this is a damn cool garage rock goodie! Some know this record as 'Trash On The Tube' EP, released via Big Beat Records. I guess the liner notes from the back cover are clear: "Here is a lively sequence of four favourites from Channel 4's great teenagers' television show, 'The Tube', that attracts a nation-wide audience every Friday evening. This dynamic programme is a feast of powerful beat music - a 'knockout' for every teenager. On this EP you have four fantastic garage rockers with a typical audience of teenagers who immensely enjoyed themselves & contributed to the atmosphere. These songs were filmed on Sunday 2nd September 1984" (Nicky Garrard) - This release actually contains studio recordings of the tracks performed live for the television show.

1.Out Of Control - THEE MILKSHAKES
2.Reaching My Head - THE PRISONERS

4.Ride This Torpedo - TALL BOYS

DÄMMERATTACKE - Tausend Seen 1982

Panza-Platte, the legedary label released a lot of finest Austria underground records. So here's the prove for a further example: Dämmerattacke is a band from Wien/Neustadt formed 1979. The band brought never heard music to light and struck all in amazement except to those who put their music categorically as synthybooming. And in fact there is no snotty '77 punk rock around here, their music is more oblique wave post-punk with pretty much synthesizers (I not mean the cheap NDW scrap you know), the melancholy voice of Michael, coupled with very personal lyrics lends all the songs a somber mood and pop sounds different. Hmm, really hard to describe. Well fuck it, all ten songs are for me a pleasant listening experience and I'm grateful to present you this rare piece of vinyl here. The band disbanded 1983. Note from the cover, Instruction For Use: Play This Product Loud An Turn Up Treble! OK, here we go...so what do you think?

- Huge Thx goes to Mr. Reinhard -

V/A - Åminne Punkfiesta 1981

Well, the last for today and a post which I have been waiting a long fuckin' time for and I am very pleased to present you this historical document now. This compilation (probably only a few editions were pressed) should be so rare that this LP is not mentioned in Peter Jandreus' awesome book The Encyclopedia Of Swedish Punk. Hmm, I don't know why but all the eleven songs are quite brilliant, (just listen to the song from MONO... world class!) Okay not much '77 punk style here and all the bands are very unknown and probably have not much more or anything else published, however musically every band convinced. A few reggae tunes, followed by simply classic punkrock and with a perfect KBD sound is this record a highlight of finest Swedish underground music and probably the rarest record here on Wdthtc.
