SUZANNES - Dutch Punk 1977-1978 [2014]

One more excellent Compilation from RaveUp Records and this fucker was pressed 2000 times and is dedicated to the Suzannes, a four piece from Enschede which operated from 1976 to 1978. Influenced by the Ramones, they called themselves to the song Suzanne by Leonard Cohen that was in their repertoire in a Punk version. Characteristic of their performances was by playing tight succession of all the songs. They made an EP on the label ‘1000 Idiots’ with six songs (in two versions, including New Disease sells 2000 copies in Europe) whose “Teenage Abortion” is the most famous song. They performed outside Enschede include in Paradiso and the Stokvis Halls in the schedule of Ultravox. Typical of the Suzanne was changing their names in Suzanne. Key member was Suzanne Ron da Costa, the only non-musician who is named on the EPs. Singer of the band was Suzanne ‘Fedde’ van der Spoel, guitarist Suzanne ‘Loek’ Stolwijk, bassist Suzanne ‘Dick’ Pekelharing and drums Suzanne ‘Klaas Sikkema’. The tracks were from the only EP New Disease Sells 2000 Copies In Europe! (recorded January 1978, live @ Paradiso (November 1977) and live @ the Vestingbar (March 30th 1979; last concert) and the B-Side was recorded live @ the OpenLuchttheater in summer 1977. That sounds pretty decent I would say, and the recordings are absolutely fine. They also appear on some very good Compis. Top!

V/A - British Underground Vol.3 1993

Last and great conclusion of this little unofficial series called British Underground by Chaos Wrecords, 500 copies were pressed and even available on CD. Well, the song selection is once again excellent as the first two volumes and sixteen punk & wave goodies are gathered here and the stand out and my favorite track is by They Must Be Russians, such a great tune and simply terrific! I'm sure you will like this compilations because the mix is great and all three albums also contain hits and rarities. It's just a shame that after volume three no more were created and so we have to be satisfied with these three. After all, they are there and now have fun with them!

1.Ghetto - THE WALL
2.All The Boys Love Carrie - ANOTHER PRETTY FACE
3.Soldier Soldier - SPIZZ ENERGI
4.Horrorshow - SCARS
5.Count For Something - THE OUTSIDERS
6.Benched Down - MODERN EON
7.Big Time - RUDI
8.Subvert - ZOUNDS
9.Death In Venice - DNV
10.In Love - THE PLAGUE
11.Where Have I Seen You? - THEY MUST BE RUSSIANS
12.Your Generation (Demo 1977) - GENERATION X

ULTRAVOX - Sleepwalk 7" 1980

Also a long musical companion from my early days are Ultravox who appeared in 1977 and released excellent albums, Ha! Ha! Ha! for example and after the break with John Foxx, Midge Ure joined as a new front man and the success came, which unfortunately also had musical effects, the band became more commercial and I like the first two albums because they, in my opinion, still fresh and virus-free. A bit info: With the band seemingly over, Ultravox were then revitalised by Midge, who joined the band as vocalist, guitarist & keyboardist. He had already achieved minor success with semi-glam outfit Slik and Glen Matlock's The Rich Kids, and in 1979 he was temporarily playing with hard rock band Thin Lizzy. Ure and Billy Currie had met while collaborating on Visage, a studio-based band fronted by New Romantic icon and nightclub impresario Steve Strange- ."Sleepwalk" is Ultravox's first single from their fourth album,Vienna, and their first with Midge Ure as frontman and was the first song the band recorded with Midge in early 1980. Rather than offering a demo tape of several songs to Chrysalis Records the reformed band opted to do a "finished" version of "Sleepwalk" with producer Conny Plank, a recording that clinched the band's record deal with Chrysalis Records. The original version was later remixed for inclusion on the band's album Vienna. There is no difference between the album version and the single version. The lyrics to the song were written by Warren Cann. It was released as a single in June 1980. Two nice popwave songs to start the weekend, Cheers!

V/A - Catch A Wave 2x10'' 1978

Welcome May and I say Hello to you with this early punk/new wave compilation in chic 10'' design and that twice. I'm really amazed, how many slabs were pressed in my favorite format, especially at this time... I have to send out a loud HOLLADRIO!!.... good boy. The two color palettes feature bands with leatherjackets, big balls, long fingernails, sexy pouts, barbed hair, rivet belt, pop hits, nylon legs, sweaty shirts, etc… and beams us back to the time when punk was 'provocative' & 'real'. Most of the first punk rock bands came from New York, punk became a real movement in London and Catch A Wave unites both cultures & countries with their local yesterdays heroes. Not all songs ignite, but fit for a little time travel. Released without a label, Made In England, but distributed primarily in Scandinavian countries (so they can thaw a little). Good Job!

1.Do Anything You Wanna Do - EDDIE & THE HOT RODS
2.Statue Of Liberty - XTC
3.Klean Living Kids - THE STUKAS
4.Television Screen - RADIATORS FROM SPACE
5.For You - GREG KIHN
6.Saints & Sinners - JOHNNY & THE SELF ABUSERS
7.Do The Standing Still - THE TABLE
8.Kidnapper - BLONDIE
9.Little Big Boss - LITTLE BOB STORY
10.Lovin' Cup - EARTH QUAKE
11.Nervous Wreck - RADIO STARS
12.Rockwrok - ULTRAVOX!
13.I Think We're Alone Now - THE RUBINOOS
14.Dancing The Night Away - THE MOTORS
15.White Line Fever - MOTÖRHEAD
16.Your Generation - GENERATION X
17.Government Action - SKREWDRIVER
18.Roadrunner - JONATHAN RICHMAN & THE MODERN LOVERS
19.Oh Bondage Up Yours! - X RAY SPEX

ULTRAVOX! - Ha! Ha! Ha! 1977

Recently my girlfriend and I talked about known bands of our youth and the name of the following band from London was interspersed by me. She said: "Sure, I know.... Vienna etc..." and I immediately visited youtube and played her the old stuff from Ultravox! and she was amazed. Of course, with Midge Ure came a new sound that made it into the charts and they became known. I mean, the records aren't bad, but the old stuff is more my cup of tea. So this is the second album by Ultravox! on Island Records and is together with their first, my favorite album. Fourteen punky songs, ingenious guitar playing, catchy rhythms, nice keys.... in a word: masterpiece! In 1979, John Foxx left after an American tour to pursue solo projects, with Simon also departing. Currie, Cross and Cann were subsequently joined by Midge on vocals and guitar. This became the most successful and well-known, 'classic' 80s line-up. I recommend you, look for the first three albums and listen to the pre-phase, you will be excited.

MODERN MAN - Things Could Be Better 7'' 1980

This record came out on MAM Records and is a good new wave one. Moden Man was a five piece and released four singles and one album and I have no further info about them, only that this 7Inch was produced by Midge Ure, lead singer by Ultravox and that's it. I will not write much more because I have problems with my Kaspersky, can't download updates and I have no idea why. Fuck!! I think, I must change my operating system... shit. B.t.w., the b-side is brilliant, a very beautiful melodic wave song.

ULTRAVOX! - Reading Festival/UK 27.08.1977

Ultravox are a British New Wave rock band and this amazing bootleg had a comfortable sound which you can download without problems. For all you out there which doesn't know the band click Ultravox!. I'm just too lazy to write more because yestarday I was in Darmstadt to join Karies and two others, I'm a little fucked up from too much beer. Fortunately is now Bundesliga and yesterday a historic moment, the SGE has stolen one point versus Bayern München.
