THE SQUATS - Noise Overdose EP 1981

80s Dutch punk band from Nijmegen here with their only record on Nep & Bedrog Records with five cool punk goodies with a nice Oi! touch. Excellent dirty kbd sound. Found much info from their web site and here's a small excerpt:

The Squats are probably one of the most controversial bands Nijmegen has ever known. The kind of teenagers you better could not have living next door to you. It seemed that they ruined more or less everything that came along their way, conform the Punks most used term in that time: DESTROY! An unbelievable 23 years ago (1978) three guys aged 14 till 17 years old from the "Grootstal" district in South Nijmegen watched the Dutch variant of 'Top of the Pops' (TopPop) on the TV and saw Iggy Pop shaking the nation up side down with his performance of "Lust For Live". The boys used to listen to stations like "VPRO"' and John Peel on the BBC on an old tube radio and they were heavily bored. But one thing was sure: They not just wanted to listen to punk, they wanted to play it. First thing the trio did before even owing any instrument was to chalk the whole of Nijmegen with the (future) band name: The Bored. In the fall of 1979, the three were able to buy a bass guitar and drumkit, changed the name into "The Squats" and placed an add in the local news paper for a guitarist. In the months following, the band had their first appearance in the local venue "Doornroosje", shocked a school in Nijmegen during a highschool band festival, and did another gig at "Doornroosje".

The early 80s have been the most productive years, lots of gigs were played and they also started recording in the studio, result was a demo called "The First, The Best, The Last?" which was released on their own "Nep En Bedrog (Fake & Fraude) Records" label. In 1981 borrowed all the money, found a studio close to town, smacked down 5 songs on 8 tracks in a couple of hours and the 'Noise Overdose" EP was a fact. 500 copies were pressed, and again released on their own label and sold out in 2 months. For sure, notorious they were, obnoxious and rude as well, call them arrogant, irritant, and ignorant but what else should you expect from 17 year old teenagers on speed, on the dole, in the early 1980's playing in a punkband from Nijmegen? That's how teenagers should behave. And after all, musically, it was a great punkband!

The Squats on compilations: Oi! The Rarities Vol.2, Punkrock From Holland, Oi! Rare & Exotica Vol.2 and Oi! Made In Holland 2. Brilliant Stuff!!!

STILLE HOFFNUNG - Falsch & Umsonst 1982

Stille Hoffnung were from Cologne and existed from 1979-1982/83? This is their only release on Paradoxx Records and we have here a nice wave/punk mix, but for me it's more punkrock. Somehow it seems this band had goin' down but I think the music is perfectly acceptable and even their very personally lyrics shows that the boys knew how to combine them with melodious music & their songs are strong. Again one of the bands that I think is completely undervalued. Reminds me little bit of Düsseldorf's Fehlfarben and lyrics like "problems which concern the world, don't touch me" shows in which direction Stille Hoffnung goes. I can only say this is a fantastic album with eleven flowers in thirty minutes, the fast-paced subculture slams around your ears.

V.V.L. - Neun Pforten (Demos) 2006

From Oberhausen come V.V.L. (Verhängnis Voller Leichtsinn) and this post includes unpublished material which were recorded in 2006, I am not sure but 2009 these three gentlemen were as The Landlords active and they have self-produced CD published. First of all I must say that it's really sad that no label has discovered this band. Much new shit is thrown to the market which is not very innovative and bands which not against the state, society or beer drinkin' have marginal chances to gain a foothold here. There is little scope left. OK, I'm watching the market not really but when I get sometimes a catalog and among the many re-releases does not appear much shattering, you know. Then I listen to the new stuff on youtube then I think "No One Needs This". Maybe it's some of you as well. I hope any label get in touch with V.V.L. because they deserve more attention. Zur Musik hier: The band provides with their sound a melancholy undertone and walks the Mönchengladbach paths. Twelve Punksongs in 40 minutes all in all, distinctive voice + driving guitars, excellent combination of bass & drums and the very professional recording is another plus point. Lyrically critical, emotionally and rousing. Visit them on MySpace for more infos, gigs and songs. For me; great songs from an interesting band. Brett!!!

V/A - Killed By 7Inch #8 EP 1999

In 1996 the Killed By Death Series starts small in form of ten 7 Inches and of course, again with extremely rare punk rock from the glory old days when this sound kicks every resonable head, ähem. Published again on Redrum Records in limited editions and still not found anywhere. So here is #8 with five bands and six rare goodies. What can I say, consistently cool. I love all the KBD records and I can really hardly detect a failure, that is music that simply moves into the blood and stays inside till collapse. This is what I feel. Anyway, you have the chance to get volume 1-5 on one record which came out in 2000. Get this quick and more pieces follow!

1.At The Hot Club - MATT GRIM
2.He's A Psycho - THE VIBRATORS
3.Blah Blah Blah - REVO
4.You Bastard - ATV
5.Witte Bamen, Zwante Bamen - DANGEROUS PYJAMAS
6.Fashion - DANGEROUS PYJAMAS

IDEAL - Zugabe 1983

Ideal is one of the bands for me that was falsely labeled as NDW-Band. Ideal were different, musically & lyrically and this live album, which also was the last, they prove the impressively vivid contrast to the Hubert Kah & associates. Absolutely brilliant punk rock, fast & snotty, and the organ brings the groove here that many NDW bands simply do not have. Fuck, what an album ... that has made in my opinion music history. And here's even a new song (Acryl - Kopf Aus Chrom) on it and it was not published anywhere else. And songs like 'Erschießen', 'Berlin' or 'Ich Kann Nicht Schlafen' are simply implusiver live. I am proud to present you this brilliant LP. Ideal were cool and they still are .. And as a bonus there are two newly remixed old songs here. In addition to off-colors one of the most important bands of this 'new wave' era. Ohhh .... I'm back in the 80's... there are bands like sand on the sea but Ideal were unique! In June 1983 appeared this album (a live album) as a "keepsake, farewell & thank you to the fans" tribute. On 26.April 2007, guitarist Frank Jürgen Krüger died at the age of 58 years, the result of a long battle against cancer. Sad and a real big loss.

V/A - Dijkdoorbraak 1982

One of my favourite dutch compilation is this rare record on Loof Records because here is a decent mix of ska/punk/newwave/powerpop & rockabilly stuff and I like variety. I guess due to the low punk factor the record is not very famous but I promise you it's worth a listen. The Winos come along with three ska influenced numbers and the singer is great, he sings sloppily you know, very charmin'. The Dip offers two powerpop goodies, nice cozy, pleasant. Rockin' Billies with two rockin's, a Carl Perkins classic and a beautiful slushy ballad, Yes! Side b with the Scissors, the new wave sound here with nice keys, a little melancholic, both tracks a dreamy atmosphere. Then Antidote, five fast tracks with the highest punk/hardcore factor, just right after the two quieter songs. Last but not least the only band of all who made a mini-LP called 'Hollanditus Provocatus' in 1984, also on Loof Records, with two cool ska tracks. Overall a very good album that impresses with its versatility, bands that nobody knows, nice artwork and here's something for everyone. Enjoy!!

1.Political Poison - WINOS
2.Village Fucker - WINOS
3.It's Problem Time - WINOS
4.It's A Dip - THE DIP
5.Face The Music - THE DIP
6.Blue Suède Shoes - ROCKIN' BILLIES
7.Forget Him - ROCKIN' BILLIES
8.Silence - SCISSORS
9.New Hope - SCISSORS
10.Het Begin - ANTIDOTE
11.BVD - ANTIDOTE
12.Stop Van Agt - ANTIDOTE
13.Openbaar Vervoer - ANTIDOTE
14.Jongerenhulp - ANTIDOTE
15.Iets Over Zuid-Afrika - WATT NOUZ
16.Zoek De Verschillen - WATT NOUZ

DAILY TERROR - Aufrecht 1984

One more classic German punk record is this here and I would say one of the best & important German Punk band was Daily Terror from Braunschweig. I can only recommend to buy their first two albums wherever you find a copy. Both are milestones!! Powerful punk rock, catchy & briskly, excellent drumming, fat bass, snotty guitars and offensive lyrics against all odds. Despite the fast tempos and rough vocal delivery to be expected from a band of this type, Daily Terror are well capable of crafting a memorable tune, a feature that distinguishes them from many talented deutschpunk combos. Musical-craft impeccable raw politically minded musicians. Daily Terror was formed 1980 out from the punk band Bombed Bodies. Their first single was released at the Hannover label No Fun Records. The band moved to the Berlin label Aggressive Rock Produktionen (AGR) and in 1982 they released their brilliant debut LP "Schmutzige Zeiten" and they played on the Chaos-Tage in Hannover, which they earned a high popularity in the punk scene and quickly became one of Germany's most respected and popular bands. Two years later their second album "Aufrecht" followed. A few copies were released with a colored cover and a 12 page printed lyric booklet, goes without saying that these are highly sought after. Singer Pedder died in April 2009 after cancer, so R.I.P. my friend and thank you for your inspiration & great music. If you want more Daily Terror stuff feel free and visit In Memories Of Daily Terror blog and enjoy your ride there. Essential!!!!!

AHEADS - s/t LP 1981

Excellent record now: short crunchy crackers and another one of my favorites. The Aheads from Herford were one of the first punk bands in the region of East Westphalia. 1975 they were founded as "Ron Age Band" and their first appearance was in 1977 at Hellepark under the name "Those Fuckin' Aheads" named after rockers from the Crumb Comix. After the first punk songs from England could be heard through the radio broadcast by John Peel in Germany and by attending a concert by Wire, the band began writing their own songs. With their unconventional sound for its time the band led by former British soldier Andy Stillon known punk bands like the Dead Kennedys has enthusiastically. The Aheads debut was the 'Freedom Of Speech EP' and one year later two songs on the great Soundtracks Zum Untergang compilation. Then toured with Slime, Betoncombo and Middle Class Fantasies. After the tour the band recorded their only album in Berlin which was released by AGR. Their last gig was in 1982 at the Audimax in Bielefeld. After the dissolution of the band guitarist Bernd and drummer Werner played in the 80s in a number of not very long-lived bands. Under the name Roll On Roll Off they released the single "Fig. 320" and the self-produced mini album "Pussy Push" in 1988. Andy Stillion, the singer of the band died on 11.July 2010 in the morning. With his girlfriend on a boat trip to the Farne Islands, he collapsed on the boat. In 2011 the remaining band members published a showcase with all produced songs including a DVD supplement with photos of their active career. A consistent, strongly recommended LP.

V/A - U-Boats Attack America!!! 1986

The Hamburg based label Weird System used to release songs of their records in a limited number of colored wax version (often limited to 1000 or even less) for our overseas punks. In the beginning the records were hand numbered too. Normally the records numbered higher than 1000 are in black vinyl. So this limited compilation licensed to and released by Flipside records in the U.S. only. A kind of Double Label edition. This American release showcases the greatest hits, as it were, of the label. All the bands here are still big ones in the german punk culture of the early 80's and serve up a series of blistering HC and punk cuts mandatory for those who don't have the original German recordings. Excellent, varied sampler. Weird system still exists today but it is not any longer that innovative Label it was in the early years. Today they focus on the re-release of old classics and a lot of compilations but on a very high level. Sad but true but they nearly stopped to release something fresh material. Last for this month, now I'm leavin' home to join the soccer match vs Dortmund.

V/A - The Power Of Love 1986

The Munich-based label Starving Missile Records has released some truly fantastic releases in it's short existence. Including these international punk compilation with mostly German bands, two from the United States and a combo from Holland. 16 awesome tracks, most of them are exclusive and were not published anywhere else and that's what makes this compilation interesting. Particularly appealing the cover here, just simply splendid.
