V/A - Life Is Change Vol.2 1991

Late on this Sunday and my last post is another international punk compilation which is for me one of the better publication on BeriBeri Records with the philosophical title "Life Is Change ". And indeed, current to me and that is reason enough to post the album now. The band/song selection is quite excellent and most songs are not published elsewhere (EA80, Spermbirds, Vagrants, Gruschenko...). Lyrically very emotinal which is probably due to the title of this compilation and all eleven bands prove this splendid. Also the artwork is more mature than Vol.1 and the EA80 track is one of my favorite songs. Also awesome both Vagrants songs which kill slowly my heart and I never heard before a band that transfer such emotional intensity with depth. I wish there were more bands like them. Wonderful!! Highly recommend album and you should buy a copy if you have the chance.

1.Thank You - GRUSCHENKO

6.Just A Moment - SPERMBIRDS

VAGRANTS - A Disappointment [Demo] 1989

Let's come to the Vagrants, a four-piece from the late Eighties and they were formed in El Cerrito, California/San Francisco and consisted of Brian (vocals), Nick (guitars), Craig [bass), Dave (drums) and they made three Tapes plus one 7Inch, and this band really has it and never got the attention they deserve. Even the toughest Punkrocker has a heart and goes through difficult times and that's exactly what these guys bring to the fore here, pure melancholic songs whose vocals combine excellently with the dark spirit and drive of Nick's guitar, even if it sounds pretty gruff and doesn't feel that way at all, the Vagrants are a must for every snotty person. The single is a lot more concise in this regard and I'm surprised that it's not on the blog, but that's coming soon because after they changed their name to Pot Valiant they released three singles and an album and a lot of Compilation stuff, and recently a double album was released with all that shit which I will be receiving shortly and then you get the full blast. The cover is also remarkable and reflects the fear & despair of various situations in life, especially as an adult when you know how all the shit in and around you starts to torment you and wants to rip your heart out. Must Listen!

VAGRANTS - Gone EP 1990

Now a band I really enjoy listening to, whose lyrics probably wrote in the subway or alone at home in complete solitude or alone on a bench or wherever. Self-critical, a bit desperate, extreme sensitive and anyone who finds words like that is either heartbreak disappointments, hopeless or simply self-critical or vexed; honest emotions, my friends, and when you combine all that with the right sound, you've created a small, unforgettable masterpiece that absolutely deserves to be heard. We're talking about the Vagrants from California and they masterfully manage the balance between harshness and emotion. They released three tapes and this little nugget on Lookout Records and a short info from of the label I would like to quote here: "The Vagrants bring a feel of mystery and brooding to their brand of Punk. Their “Gone” EP packs plenty of layered Rock on top of Punk sensibilities to create a satisfying slice of moody underground rock from 1990 with a slow heavy, (pre-) emo sound that reveals more upon repeated listens. Three tracks designed for an introspective afternoon." It's no secret that they later changed their name to Pot Valiant, finding more peaceful sounds for more profound words. Well, an amazingly cool record that you should have, I'm going out now and walking into the night.

V/A - Can Of Pork 1992

Another Lookout! release is the epic -Can Of Pork- compilation, a great document of the thriving early 1990's punk scene in the East Bay and other pocket scenes around the US including The Lookouts final recorded appearance, Kick Me In The Head, truly one of their more loose, rocking tracks. Also featured are Fifteen, Blatz, the first recorded appearance of Lag Wagon among the rest of this top notch comp along with nuggets from other Lookout! artists. Another achievement of Can Of Pork, was to capture on record a number of other unsung punk treasures of the day, such as One Man Running, Vagrants and The Porcelain Boys. Legendary ex-OPIV outfit Downfall contributed North Berkeley, teasing interest in one of the most anticipated bands that was to never be. Housed in perfect Lookout trademark style artwork, Can Of Pork stands the test of time as a document of its day - covered in punk landmines, and littered with the right attitude. Originally released as double vinyl, a nice booklet which contains band infos, lyrics and some writing and comics. The spine lists this as Lookout Rekkidz #44 and is one more important chapter of punkrock history blah, blah, blah @#$%&*?!!!"

V/A - The Thing That Ate Floyd 1988

This huge 1988 compilation is like a history lesson for those uneducated about the world of the Gilman Street and Californian punk scene of the time. Compiled by David Hayes and originally spanning four sides of 12'' vinyl (and later on a remastered double CD) there are few chinks in this musical armor. Unreleased material comes in the form of such Lookout! artists and that’s only scratching the surface. This iconic release, packed with 34 tracks of goodness also has such favorites of the day as, No Use For A Name, Capitol Punishment and The Vagrants. An amazing representation of the fertile California underground scene that went on to define punk into the 90s. Housed in unique packaging wrapped around a huge booklet. This compilation was released to showcase Bay Area punk bands that were playing at Berkeley's Gilman Street Project in the late 1980s. Original first-pressing has Lookout's old Laytonville address on it and a blue jacket. 4000 copies were pressed. The first 50 copies were pressed on orange vinyl. Released with a 24-page newsprint booklet with info on the bands and lyrics. File this release under: Essential!!

POT VALIANT - Volar 7'' 1993 + Loud Street EP 1993 + Transaudio LP 1994

And now we come to a completely underrated band in my opinion and their music was provided for many enjoyable moments in my life. Pot Valiant featured all the members of the East Bay mainstay the Vagrants, and Filth and the Wynona Riders' Dave E.C. on drums. Cloudy melodies and powerful, yet sensitive vocals make their releases one of the most delicate records ever. The press called them 'Emo' but i hate descriptions or drawers like this. They are a punk band and they do it in another way, you know. They have dedicated themselves to the more contemplative music and they just as angry and pissed off than any hardcore band. Anyway, here i have all the songs the band ever released packed together, their two 7inches, the song from the 2x7'' sampler Misfit Heartbeat (not included in the re-upp) and the awesome, but unfortunately one album from 1994. All in all fifteen great songs that are worthy to be always played. Essential!!!!

V/A - The Dark Days Are Over (13 Weeks Later) 2025

Welcome to another indispensable release on WDM Records, and number 017 is a small follow-up to the last Compilation I posted thirteen weeks ago. Both can be considered as a whole. That's of course due to the experience I've had, and I know that the person concerned will never listen to this music, but I had a little hope for change and didn't want to accept this situation. After all, I thought there was some feeling involved, but now I know it better, the file is closed I can say. I thought so too, but I like to give a second chance and I think it's only fair, but when you realize there's really nothing there, just only self-interest, selfishness, and zero emotions, I have no other choice to let this person go who was truly important to me, and that hurts like fucking hell. Well, dear friends, it's not a pleasant experience and I know, I am a fool, but it's part of life, like buying bread from the baker or need to pee. I hope this selection reflects the inner turmoil I've gone through, and if anyone now in this trouble or has currently experiencing something similar will find comfort & strength in this fucker, hope it helps and conveys to you that YOU are valuable and don't let yourself be beaten down or taken advantage of, and that you will do better next time, recognize the signs and listen to your instincts. Personally, I have to say it's one of the best Comps I've ever made, and it accompanies me while cooking, cleaning, or posting. Every song is a nail in the coffin and a cry for help. And if this stupid bitch ever reading this: think about your life and stop screwing over people who like/love you and show a little respect! - So, now it's out and finished. My dear listeners, I wish you positive thoughts while listening to this short emotional musical roller coaster.
