H.D.Q. - You Suck! 1987

Second album on Meantime Records by H.D.Q. from Sunderland, one of the most important UK melodic Hardcore bands of the late Eighties and they released five records in their life-span and I know only the first two ones. But these are powerful and pure energy. Of course this is also Dickie Hammond's (Leatherface) guitar playing, which he underlines with rich melodies and strong riffs, plus the demanding lyrics, and there isn't boredom even with three minute songs. If you haven't heard H.D.Q., you're missing out on a very influential and highly entertaining Hardcore combo. Let's see if I can answer some emails later, I'm way behind.
Maybe a second post will follow.

H.D.Q. - Hung, Drawn & Quartered 1985

From Hendon/Sunderland came H.D.Q. and line-up on their debut were Pyley (vocals), Dick (guitars), Lainey (bass), Anth (drums), released via Endangered Musik and they developed into one of the UK's finest live bands as well as recording some killer tunes. Not surprisingly they have been criminally ignored by the stupid "Music Press" and this eight song classic is an excellent example of their power and dynamic, fantastic melodic tunes and anything but AmericanI still have to relax, because the weekend was too intense! Enjoy!

THE SECT - This Side Of Summer EP 1992

Pretty three piece EP from the 333 x Up & Down series which was created in the Nineties by the legendary Incognito Records label and each release is limited to 333 copies. And Barny, the founder, was guest at Nolti's New Rose on Nikolaus last year and chatted about the early days, his publications, experiences, re-releases, mp3's and more nice anecdotes in a relaxed atmosphere and it's really fun to listen to both. Very interesting for me because I had the pleasure of getting to know him in the Hamburger Marquee when Broken Toys was on tour with the Schwarzen Schafe and I was doing civil service in Lüneburg at the time. I was even able to visit the tour a second time, in Oberursel. It was all in the early nineties and I also bought a few singles from him. - The Sect was a melodic Punk combo with an edge done the old way from the West Midlands and consisted of Kevin (vocals), Terry & kevin (guitars), Kevin P. (bass), John (drums) and were active from 1986 - 1992 and released two albums (listen) and a couple of 7Inches and they playing catchy powerful solid melodic songs in the vein of GNW or HDQ and didn't get unfortunately a lot of attention and stayed more in the underground and only a must for die-hard fans. Do yourself a favour and choose this one and enjoy their awesome sound.

- Great Thx to Reinhard -

REASON TO BELIEVE - When Reasons Sleeps, Demons Dance 1990

A remnant of my old blog and I don't remember who sent it but it's worth to post this music again. Reason To Believe was formed in South Bay, Los Angeles in summer 1987. They released "The Next Door EP" in 1988 and "When Reason Sleeps, Demons Dance " two years later, both on Nemisis Records. The band plays a decent catchy melodical hardcore with a singer who's voice is damn amazing, reminds me a litte bit of the powerful English sound from HDQ, Gun's & Wankers or the Instigators. These twenty-five minutes are quite brilliant and has such dynamic like a waterfall and I can listen to everytime, everywhere, early 90s the band split up and now ready for the Waldstadion!

H.D.Q. - Believe EP 1988

H.D.Q. from Sunderland were in the late 1980s one of the most innovative and popular punk bands on the island - More information about the band click H.D.Q. - They founded together with Snuff the new generation of UK bands that are more oriented to American standards à la Dag Nasty as in British No Future Punk. After their split legendary bands like Leatherface and Doctor Bison were formed. And you can hear clearly: Believe, released on Loony Tunes Records, contains four inflaming songs and especially "Through My Eyes" is my absolute favorite one. Today very rare and hard to find and if you don't catch this I don't know what's wrong with you.

V/A - Underground Rockers 2 1989

One of the best covers I think is made here on this compilation and I quote the liner-notes on the back cover which I can only agree: "Another bunch of UNDERGROUND ROCKERS bands who, outside of the fanzine network and for a few, the John Peel show, are totally ignored. The first "Underground Rockers" compilation saw The Instigators sing "Full Circle", a phrase that seems very suitable when you think about influences. A growing number of British bands are being influenced by the American "Hardcore" groups, whose sound has evolved from listening to the likes of The Ruts and Stiff Little Fingers. On this LP you'll find both bands who lean towards the U.S. Hardcore sound and others who favour the early sound of the British Punk bands. But who ever they listen to they refrain from straight copying, each strives for their own sound and style, with just a nod in the right direction of their musical preferences. As with the first volume, it's not important whether you'd give these bands the "Punk" or "Hardcore" tag, judge 'them on their songs, be they fast or slow and on their energy, excitement and power. They deserve to be heard. Many of these bands are finding that they're better received over in Europe. Countless tales of big crowds at gigs, friendly, appreciative people and good treatment all round. It's time we, in this country, stopped being so snobbish and started treating bands, be they British, American, European or whatever, with the respect they so rightly deserve." (Tony Suspect)
