EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN - Haus Der Lüge 1989

Now here's a record that I've always enjoyed listening to and that somehow fits my mood perfectly, and also a visual and acoustic experience live as well. I still remember the first time I put the record on: "Are they going to be commercial now?" I thought, and I immediately had to play it again. And I forgot all the noises and drills and realized that the band had developed further and for better. Well, and therefore it might be a good entry for newcomers, you decide... Info: Haus Der Lüge (House Of Lies) is the fifth full-length by Einstürzende Neubauten and is the final one of Eighties, found the group wrapping up that decade on a high note; while the eight songs barely lasts over half an hour, it's designed for maximum impact, and that it creates. Probably the classic epitome of industrial! The eventual acceptance of the unconventional, Neubauten-typical fusion of sound, rhythm, and words. The seasoned five-person lineup clatters and bangs away with fire, though the focus is more on straightforward industrial-tinged rock, as opposed to full-on industrial banging and relentless sonic experimentation. The almost eerie, subtly morbid momentum and importance, which are based on the unprecedented cult status of the band, make this record one of the most important of its era and definitely the most important of its genre! A beautiful EN record that has it all: powerful beats, poetic lyrics, ballads, and authentic excursions.

NEUROTIC ARSEHOLES - All' Die Jahre (Live) 1986

One of the best German Punk combos of the 80s were Neurotic Arseholes, and it didn't take long for me to fall in love with them. I'm one of the lucky ones who got to see them live three times. The band liked the idea of a farewell LP, and the collaboration with Weird System enabled them to fulfill their wish with this third and final album. Seventeen pieces, three of which have never been released before, were compiled from various live tapes of concerts in West Germany and Berlin in 1985-1986, and mostly from the farewell concert at the AJZ Bielefeld. The quality is excellent and brings the dynamic/power of the Arseholes damn well into your living room, the vocals are sometimes a bit weak and the bass could have more bums, but if you know the songs you'll feel comfortable and it's absolutely catchy for newcomers. And I can tell you, I haven't listened to the record for a long time, but it transports me back where life was carefree and innovative, and every Punk gig brought always a sense of well-being and lots of fun. Unfortunately, I can't confirm that anymore (today everything can be found on the fucking social networks). Well, what can I say, getting old sucks and memories are precious, after all they are part of our history and I like to dig them up every now & then, especially in empty moments. Enough bla bla, enjoy the four guys from Minden and buy their records.

WOMBELS - Back Attack 2014

One of my favorite bands are the Wombels from Ulm and they play energetic and melodic Punkrock, sometimes at a breathtaking pace. Influenced by Eighties West Coast Punk, PopPunk, and even Hardcore, the trio, founded in 1985 by Steff (vocals/guitars), Sevan (bass), Heiko (drums), rose to national renown after various releases on Incognito Records. They toured Germany and gigs abroad in the 1990s, quickly building a loyal fan base. After the bassist left in 2004, the band inevitably shrank to a duo. Following a four-year phase as the Wombels duo, the trio was completed again in 2008 with Granni on bass. Back Attack is their third and final self-released album, featuring sixteen entertaining, hearty, and refreshingly flavorful shooting stars. Don't be fooled by the band name; it may sound harmless, but these three really pack a punch, and I'm thrilled with their music and records. And when I tell you this, you can believe me without a doubt.

V/A - Fahrt Zur Hölle...Und Kommt Nie Mehr Wieder EP 1998

Olalala, what a very nice 7Inch Hardcore/Punk Compilation we have here from the small Aus'm Bauch label which had a total of six releases and I think that's their debut one. You'll hear six fast, trashy goodies from relatively unknown German bands that hit hard, uncompromising, and furiously forward. It comes in a very stylish, informative format, and the title alone is a great choice, giving you a clue as to where this is headed. I have no idea how many pressings there are, but that doesn't matter; anyone who likes fast and furious will be well catered to here. Every band has released something on vinyl, but as I said, it's rather lost and unrecognized in the vast ocean of Punkrock, which is a shame, but it's no different with international records. The EP isn't very sought after, but it's definitely worth a listen.

1.Untitled - PEACE OF MIND
2.04 - DELLWO
3.Plastikwelt - MAD MINORITY
4.Maul Als Waffe - EL MARIACHI
5.Platt Aber Oho - KOYAANISQATSI
6.Umzu - KÜCHENMESSER NR.8

LAMINAT.SNYDER - s/t 7'' 2024

Easy Listening by this project from Siegen called Laminat.Snyder and members are Stefanie Shrnk (vocals), Björn Sonnenberg, Florian Gelling, Doe Bed, Martin Kircher (vocals), Christian Stemmann, Oli Spielberger, Christian Schneider (vibraphone, drums and all other instruments) and this is a musical experimental journey with two five minute pieces, released via Frei zum Abriss Kollektiv in a small edition of 33 copies. We listen to noises far removed from the fast-paced time and they invite you to immerse yourself in sound worlds that are extremely pleasant and will shake your head properly and kick all the fucking thoughts out. I find it extremely soothing and stimulating and it helps me with my creativity for a new Compilation that will follow shortly. Experience the band for yourselves, I have to go, the weekend and the sun are calling me.

MERCEDES JENS - Hand In Hand Zum Amt EP 2020

"Bremen's dumbest band, anyone who says otherwise should show their high school diploma!" We're talking about Mercedes Jens, a three piece which was founded sometime in 2016 by Hannes, Lukas and Thomas. "A very good record with four very good songs!" so describes the trio Mercedes Jens their first record, which is limited to 200 copies. In this file there are six songs in total, where I got the others from remains a secret. This is the soundtrack for adventurous young people, for pensioners who buy their own bread, for all age groups, and for lonely, aggressive pacemakers, also for young and old. They have three tapes and an EP out, and anyone who likes straightforward, magical Punkrock and dares to delve into the fucking ether of the spiritual depths of darkness with every note is in good hands with these guys from the Hanseatic City. Haven't heard such cool shit in a long time.

BIG BALLS & THE GREAT WHITE IDIOT - Art.1 Die Würde Des Menschen Ist Unantastbar 1980

Big Balls & The Great White Idiot were formed in Hamburg 1977, but its members had actually worked together to some extent since 1975 and experimented with other types of music. In 1977, however, they took the direction of playing punk, and that's when this name came about. The members of Big Balls & The Great White Idiot were three half-Icelandic brothers, Pétur Adolph G. Grund drummer, Atli Halldór Lothar Grund guitarist and Alfreð Grund bassist, the fourth member was Wolfgang Lorenz and played guitar and the brothers all sang. The band was among the first and best-known punk bands in Germany and is probably still active in some form there, although little has been heard of them in recent years. In their early years, they were considered very provocative and theit live performances were always an adventure. The Balls released about a dozen LPs and singles and were one of the first early German Punk bands and their lyrics were written in English.

Performances on stage were highly aggressive; they were known to shout at the audience to go home. "Baron Adolf" provoked the audience by wearing a Nazi uniform and a black moustache as an expression of anarchy. Punk News magazine called their sound "mean and ugly." Their reasoning was "Wir hassen alle und wollen von allen gehasst werden. Die Leute sollen durch unsere Musik zum Durchbrechen und Aufmotzen gezwungen werden, damit sie ihre Frustration merken.“ ("We hated everyone and wanted to be hated by everyone. Through our music we wanted to force people to have a break-through and feel a call to action, so that they would notice their frustration.")

Their first album was released in 1977 by Nova/Teldec, named Big Balls. Among the seventeen songs were several covers: a version of the Pistols' "Anarchy In The U.K.", in this case "Anarchy In Germany," a cover of "White Light, White Heat“ by the Velvet Underground, and a cover of "Search & Destroy“ by the Stooges. In 1978 Big Balls released their second album Foolish Guys. Their next two albums, Artikel 1 and Creepy Shades, were released on their own label Balls Records, the latter bringing a change in sound away from Punk. The Eighties saw the "Balls" (with French guitarist Hervé Rozoum) more often in theaters contributing their music to various stageplays. In the 1990s, the Balls produced several albums with actor Jan Fedder as "Jan Fedder & Big Balls".

"Rock'N'Roll is not just music – it is much more." (Balls motto)

SERENE FALL - Sorry, No Birthday Music 2014

I know it's summer and Serene Fall aren't known for funny songs, but given the current situation, I've taken the trouble to find a suitable Adequate. In their final years, the band recorded their sets live in their rehearsal room before concerts and sold the CDs, lovingly packaged, for a small fee in the city where they later performed. A fantastic idea, I think. Today, they're highly sought after and coveted by Serene Fall fans. I have no idea how many of these CD's exist, but each one is unique, handmade and comes in a high-gloss fotopaper and this one features eight nuggets in the typical anxious, desperate and angry Serene Fall style, recorded on 29.09.2014, and since some of my favorite songs are on this Fucker I didn't have to think long. I have some more CD's at the start and when I'm not in love they will surely follow. Enjoy!

ANDREA'S AUSLAUF - Schwarzer Humor [Tape] 1987

A not uninteresting audio document from the former GDR follows now and I use an excellent description that I could not write better: "A lovingly designed and detailed MajorLabel re-release of the Suhl Punk band's legendary 1987 demo tape. Comes in a sturdy inside-out gatefold cover with a 28-page, 4c LP-sized booklet, A2 poster (cover image) and download code! Limited and numbered to 600 copies, 350 in black, 250 in red vinyl. Already featured on the groundbreaking Too Much Future - Punkrock GDR 1980-1989,' a previously criminally neglected gem of GDR Punk is now finally honored: Andrea's Auslauf from Suhl (1984-1987). The band was founded in 1983/84 in the Suhl Montagskreis circle by Wolf (vocals/guitars), Andreas (bass) & Thomas (drums), musicians who had previously been active in local Punk/Wave bands. From the very beginning, the band's wave influence was striking, shaped by West German acts like Fehlfarben and Abwärts. As local scene celebrities with numerous gigs, Andrea's Auslauf released their 21-song demo tape in 1987 in a proud album format, which is released here for the first time – carefully remastered – on vinyl. Shortly after 'Schwarzer Humor', the band disbanded; some members later played with DIE BASTARDS, MESSER BANZANI and WARTBURGS FÜR WALTER. To this day, scene insiders consider 'Schwarzer Humor' to be one of the best GDR Punk releases ever. The lavish booklet contains all the song lyrics, previously unpublished and completely restored photos, as well as a comprehensive band biography and scene description, naturally from firsthand sources. A major label co-production with Trümmer Pogo, Elbtal Records and Heldenstadt Anders e.V." - Conclusion: Another great nugget of East German Punk history.

BENZIN - Demo [Tape] 2019

We stay in Berlin and meet a four piece called Benzin and they consisted of Anne (vocals), Phuong Vu (guitars), T. Rexilius (bass) & Denes (drums). A jagged, agile strumming guitar, a furious drum kit, pissed-off vocals, a helter-skelter sound: That's the sounds of Benzin. They founded 2019 and in the same year the first demo with seven excellent smashers was released, four years later a live tape followed. They are a HardcorePunk band with heart and songs that are centered around catchy riffs with outbursts and the zeitgeist of the Eighties HC scene. Last year they released their debut album Treibjagd on StaticAge Records and Benzin stands for distinctiveness and feels comfortable in the underground and has little interest in being "discovered". This little sucker is a blistering barrage of blazing beats and breakneck bursts and it's good to see that the Punk spirit is alive. Now I'm going out and enjoying the sun.

CRAPSCRAPERS - Don't Waste Money EP 1985

An extremely cozy 7-inch with delicate sounds of the Eighties, and I'm really surprised that there's excellent information about the young combo on discogs, which I'm happy to include here: Hardcore Punk from Spandau/West Germany. Crapscrapers from Berlin started in early 1984 as a three piece band, founded by singer and guitarist Bruno, the driving force of the band. The members were: Bruno (vocals/guitar), Blume (bass), Thomé (drums). With this line-up, they released the self-produced tape 'Alle Haben Gekotzt, Nur Ich Nicht' in 1984, followed in spring 1985 by the EP 'Don't Waste Money', recorded in October 1984. In May 1985, singer Kunterbunt joined the band as the fourth member. With this line-up, they recorded two songs co-written by Kunterbunt in the Studio Kerngehäuse in Kreuzberg in fall of 1985 for a planned compilation LP - one of them, "Next Generation", was released on the Kulturschock Attacke Vol.1 Compilation in 1986. The track "Soccer" was instead released on the German Spiel Ohne Grenzen (W.Bärlin "DDR" Sampler) tape in 1986, both tracks were also released on V/A - But This Product Is Crap ! Compilation tape in 1986.

From then on, drummer Thomé was replaced at rehearsals by Marina from Subkultur due to differences in opinion. The band did not split up in 1985, as wrongly stated in the booklet of 'Spiel Ohne Grenzen' - the year 1985 merely marked significant changes in the band's line-up and with it a change in the band's style. They continued to rehearse and write new material, their sound became more compact and powerful over time - but they no longer performed live and there were no further releases. Guitarist Bruno became more and more influenced by speed/thrash metal during this time, which was noticeable in some of the newer songs from this period, e.g. "Bad Attitude" and "Rhythm Of Death". Sometime between 1986/87 they changed their name to Bad Attitude (not to be confused with the german Punk band Bad Attitude who were active at the same time). The result of all these developments was a studio recording in March 1988 of the song "Rhythm Of Death" for a planned EP under the new band name - with Marina on drums and Matze from Malinheads on bass. But there were still plenty of straight forward HardcorePunk songs, like the also new tracks "Theory" & "Abortion", as well as mid-paced punk songs - unfortunately, no material from this period was ever released.

In the course of 1988, the band broke up for good. Bruno later played with Malinheads and can be heard on their 1991 split LP with MVD. Two identical pressings of 500 copies each, only the cover layout has been slightly changed for the second one. Decent board with eight noisy highlights. Cheers!

KALTWETTERFRONT - Wenn Kaputt-Dann Wir Spass 1982

I hope the Easter holidays are pleasant and you can relax and unwind from the drudgery of everyday life and enjoy some good music. Today I'm coming to a rare record that's not without interest. Not necessarily a Punk classic, but an important building block of the Hanover underground scene. After the debut Inkubationszeit lead singer Bernie left the band, and the previous drummer Micha, took the mic. Thomas "Tier" Wolff of the Cretins and Blut+Eisen became the new drummer, and the second and final album was finally released on Frostschutz Records and represents a significant step in the band's development. Musically, the album oscillates between Punk, NewWave, and Post-Punk, making it an interesting document of the early EightiesThirteen rough and unpolished songs with an energetic guitar riffs and driving rhythms. They shine with a variety of sound textures to convey their messages, with the use of synthesizers in some tracks adding a futuristic touch. Particularly noteworthy are the catchy melodies, which exude a certain optimism despite the often dark lyrics. The words are characterized by a mixture of irony and seriousness. Topics such as alienation, social norms, and dealing with one's own identity are addressed in a direct and often provocative way. The band manages to create a connection between personal experiences and social observations, making the lyrics both relatable and thought-provoking. It sounds very authentic and passionate, which is also reflected in the energy of the recordings. Overall, a very good record with catchy melodies and a valuable piece of German music history from the early rebel years.

ROTZKOTZ - Kein Problem 7'' 1980

Second vinyl and only 7Inch by Rotzkotz from Hanover (active 1977-1982) on Welt-Rekord. The band emerged in the late Seventies, made a significant contribution to the German Punk & New Wave scene with their album "Much Funny." However, as with many releases from this era, there are both positives and negatives. It is characterized by a raw, energetic sound, and the instrumentation is simple but effective, distorted guitar riffs, driving drum rhythms, and a concise bass create an atmosphere that invites you to sing along and dance, complemented by the direct and forthright vocals. However, one could criticize the lack of musical complexity in some places. The melodies are catchy but often predictable, which calls into question the longevity of the songs. The lyrics reflect the spirit of the time and address everyday problems and frustrations that we are all familiar with. Nevertheless, the lyrical content sometimes remains superficial and offers little deeper insight. One could argue that the band gets lost in clichés instead of offering new perspectives. Overall, this little sunshine is an interesting time capsule, and with its energy and attitude, Rotzkotz succeeds in conveying a message that remains relevant today. However, the piece lacks the musical depth and lyrical substance to make it a timeless work in the annals of music history. For fans, the single is certainly worth a look, while other listeners may not get their money's worth.

V/A - Berlin Frisbee #02 EP 2002

Second 7Inch Compilation in the small Berlin Frisbee series, released alongside the masterpiece Wenn Kaputt Dann Wir Spass. All of this material is a fascinating piece of divine music that powerfully captures the pulsating energy and creativity of the Berlin underground scene. Upon first listening, I was immediately impressed by the diversity and innovative approach of the tracks included. The compilation offers an exciting mix and reflects the feeling of early, spontaneous basement bands, and each track brings its own character, making the overall listening experience extremely pleasant and varied. It's impressive how diversely the then enclave of Berlin managed to combine its influences while simultaneously presenting its own distinctive style. Many of the songs are not only musically appealing, but also emotionally profound. The lyrics tell stories that range from personal experiences to social issues, and this symbiosis simply sticks in your mind, making listening to this little nostalgic record an intense experience. The recordings are consistently high-quality, and Weird System, as always, has selected the best nuggets. Creative and experimental, Berlin Frisbee #02 is an excellent homage that brings the early Punk rebellion into your home. It's a record I enjoy playing again and again to preserve my identity and be swept away by the energy of the raw sound. 1000 hand numbered copies and an absolute must-have!

V/A - Ei Gude Wie 2015

Back with a local compilation from the beautiful state of Hesse and this beauty features Hessian Cult Hits, that's says the cover but cult isn't the right word, what is cult? There are about 80% good songs on it, that's why I ordered the CD and the Bembel on the front fits our culture and we drink the delicious Äppelwoin out this. My version is called Bloodstains Across Hessen with more Punk material. For me, this thing is not a bad buy, good selection and ideal for tourists. Phew, I'm a bit irradiated and so I'll say goodbye quickly and see you tomorrow, enjoy the music!

CRETINS & BLUT+EISEN - Dachau Disco 7'' 1984

Absolutely brilliant split 7inch from two German combos that I really appreciate and whose records served me well in my early days as  Punkrocker and still boom from my speakers and shouldn't be missing in any collection: Cretins and Blut+Eisen, both from Hanover and this is a rare piece from Weird System and as far as I know both tracks are only available on this little fucker. Discogs says: Dachau Disco was a new recording, first released on the infamous HanNOver FunFunFun (why hasn't this been posted yet?) Compilation, here with slightly changed lyrics to avoid any previous accusations of fascism. It's not that important, this 7Inch is a highlight of German Wertarbeit and everything fits on it. I think, the first 1000 copies came in yellow vinyl and are very sought after among collectors today. With this I have made you happy once again and now I am withdrawing into my darkness. Cheers!

HOTEL KEMPAUSKI - Sternzeichen Kartoffel - Aszendent Sauerkraut EP 2022

It's been a while since I presented you a new, promising band from Schleswig-Holstein, Hotel Kempauski, and back then I was still working with a band member who unfortunately changed his employer, since then there's Funkstille, but that doesn't stop me from wishing his band continued positive vibes. This little EP is their latest vinyl release to my knowledge and in advance, with which I can only agree, a little official info: The self-proclaimed building society Punks from Kiel are taking HardcorePunk into its long overdue midlife crisis. Live, they offer speed, cynicism, lengthy announcements and Hotel Kempauski deliver solid melodies to combat the tristesse and let off steam and they made it cool, because they're good at it. It's rough, it's loud, it's splendid. Six decent banger with the typically North German confusing lyrics, but very clear (it's really interesting how they went from the potato harvest to democracy, + other cool associations... simply delicious), and after nine minutes you're back in reality. Six songs, limited edtion of 250 copies, self-released and it's worth to visit their homebase for more releases.

THE NIKOTEENS - Slamdance Party Vol.3 1986

When we talk about Ingolstadt, only one band immediately comes to my mind: The NikoteensI'm sure fans of quality German HardcorePunk will know straight away that the guys have released their first album via the Cologne Malermeister, which doesn't sound bad at all. Circa two years later a tape was recorded named Hardcore Holocaust (1985), which can be read on the front cover, and thirteen of the eighteen songs were finally immortalized on this fucking vinyl, brought us by Starving Missile. And the fact that Americans also like fast, aggressive sounds from overseas is proven by a short and snappy review: Divided into a “Romantic” side and a “Realistic” side, this band pulls off an out-of-the-ordinary LP. Their punk is not generic usually, but doesn’t really drift into experimentation or post-punk to pull it off. Can’t really say what it is, but it’s a tad different. Worth checking out. (Tim Yohannan, MRR #38 • July 1986) The postman was just here with new material and I will get to it immediately to repay the donor who lent me the record. That means I'll be away for a while. Enjoy this brilliant album with a cold beer. I say Cheers, Baby!

CLOCK OF TIME - Pestilent Planet 12'' 2020

Time for something new and if you have Positive Energie #2, you know this band from Berlin, if not you should definitely catch up. Pestilent Planet is an extremely dark name for an album but take a look yourself, the record came out five years ago and nothing has changed and I think the band is more concerned with the stupid morons who are destroying our earth with their madness, profit thinking and useless ideas. You know exactly what I mean, look at Europe and the USA, what idiots are deciding there is no longer acceptable. But I don't want to get political, that's not what wdthtc is here for, you have surely your own opinion, I feel the album is very good and unfortunately it is their only album to date. A bit of info: Debut seven track 12Inch from Berlin’s Clock Of Time (Corey, Tobi, Nordberg, Seth & Kalo.) and it’s released a mere eight months (limited mailorder edition of 200 copies on translucent green vinyl) after they played their first gig. The band comes fully formed and up to speed but that is not surprising considering some of the members other projects such as Diät, Vexx and Useless Eaters. Pestilent Planet is a stunning statement of intent. The sound is a driving mix of PostPunk like Jeopardy era The Sound, and that classic 80's Death Rock that Vex and Arch Criminals perfected. It’s instant and urgent, for example just tracks like 'Rotten Master' which has a fuller Joy Division esque vibe especially in the skeletal guitar hook. It will be love on first listen." (Sean Forbes)I'm tired, enough for today, it was a long day of music, enjoy!

V/A - Wahrschauer CD #1 1995

Today we come to an interesting Compilation that was created by a Berlin fanzine called Wahrschauer in 1995. At that time, there was an increasing trend to include a free CD as a supplement in the Heftsche, see OX, ZAP or others, in order to introduce new bands/music to the valued readers and of course to give the respective protagonists a platform to become better known through the local scene and thus attract attention and thus enable concerts outside their radius. This didn't always meet with a positive response, some said it was only intended to increase their circulation to Punk fans, but I think it is an excellent idea, because it is the only way for the 'small' bands to have a chance of being heard. And the Berlin Wahrschauer fanzine stuck to this brilliantly, because most of the CDs featured Berlin bands and in some cases the quality was astonishing. The special thing about it is always the do-it-yourself booklet, you just have to cut out the stuff, the dimensions are excellently formatted on the jewel case and you have an excellent self-made copy, which is fun and saves money. I can't say whether that's still the case today, I bought my last fanzine around that time, in the late 90s. Today, with social networks and online reading, that's all a thing of the past, but that was innovation and you were always waiting for the new issue. Well, dear friends, that's how it is. You almost degenerate into a rotten vegetable. I still have a few of them in stock, not many, but they will come out eventually, enjoy the music. Cheers!
